Tips to Install a Second Hard Drive in Vista Computer by shally
Although the number of reliable, external storage drives have increased, you may wish to install additional storage internally on your Windows Vista computer for applications, paging files, multimedia and for installing other operating systems. Windows Vista includes a “Computer Management” tool that allows you to easily partition and format hard disks, as well as alter the drive letter associated with the drive. Installing a second hardware should take no longer than an hour.
Install the Hardware
1. Acquire a hard drive that is compatible with your computer’s motherboard. The hard drive should match the type of controller available on your system, such as SATA or IDE.
2. Turn off your computer. Remove all cables and peripherals connected to the computer.
3. Remove the left side panel (when facing the front) by unscrewing screws or manipulating latches.
4. Locate your 3.5-inch bays at the front of the case. Clip your antistatic wrist bracelet to a metal object, and strap the bracelet to your wrist.
5. Remove the second hard drive from its antistatic sleeve. Examine the back of your second hard drive. Set the jumper to “Slave” if you are installing an IDE hard drive.
6. Connect the hard disk ribbon to the back of your hard drive. Insert a power supply connector from the power supply into the back of your hard drive.
7. Slide the hard drive into an empty bay. Secure the hardware by screwing in screws into the pre-drilled holes.
8. Remove your antistatic wrist bracelet, and reattach the side panel. Plug in all peripherals.
Check the Hard Disk in the BIOS
1. Power on the computer.
2. Press the key as shown on your screen to access the BIOS setup immediately after rebooting the computer. (You should see a “Press X to access the BIOS” or a similar message. Consult you computer documentation if you do not see this message and do not know how to access the BIOS.)
3. Access the “IDE HDD Auto Detection,” “Standard CMOS Features” or the appropriate category for your specific BIOS by using the arrow keys to highlight and “Enter” to select. These categories will vary according to the BIOS on your computer. Please consult your computer documentation if you cannot find the category that shows your hard drives.
4. Examine the settings to ensure that the BIOS is reading both hardware.
5. Save and exit the BIOS.
Create and Format a Partition in Windows Vista
1. Proceed to Windows Vista. Click “Start” after you sign in and reach the desktop.
2. Type “computer” in the “Search” text field. Click “Computer Management.”
3. Click “Disk Management” under the “Storage” header in the left column of the Computer Management window.
4. Right-click your new hard drive, and click “New Simple Volume.”
5. Click “Next” when the “New Simple Volume Wizard” appears on-screen.
6. Click “Next” to accept the maximum hard disk partition size shown, or manipulate the size if you wish to create multiple partitions on your new hard disk, then click “Next.” (Creating multiple partitions may be useful if you intend to install multiple operating systems. Otherwise, create a single partition.)
7. Click “Next” to accept the default drive letter, or assign a different drive letter, then click “Next.”
8. Click “Next” in the “Format Partition” box. Click “Finish.” Allow several minutes for Windows Vista to format and partition your hard disk.
